About your Course

This Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning has been designed to give you the skills you need to work with, and support, children and young people in an educational setting.

During your studies you will cover a wide range of areas including communication, development, planning activities, monitoring and more.

You will also gain insight into how schools and colleges are structured and operate, health and safety legislation and the importance of safeguarding and child welfare.

By the time you have qualified, you will have gained essential knowledge that will help you support teachers and pupils/students in a variety of environments within the school.

This course requires learners to be working or on a practical placement for the duration of the course in a learning environment. This will allow you to put your learning into practice, but you will also need to demonstrate competence in both skills and knowledge to qualify.

Undertaking this course will build on your practical experience to make you a highly effective teaching assistant (or similar role). It will also serve as a platform for additional study to enhance your skills further.

As part of the assessment for this qualification, you will be required to undergo direct observation in a suitable environment.

Unit 3: Safeguarding Children and Young People

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Understand the action to take when children and young people are ill or injured, including emergency procedures
  • Understand child protection procedures
  • Know about current policies and procedures for confidentiality and sharing information, including data protection

Unit 4: Understand Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Work with Children and Young People

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Understand the importance of promoting equality and diversity in a learning environment
  • Understand how to contribute to the inclusion of children and young people with special needs and disabilities

Unit 5: Support the Health and Safety of Children and Young People

There are no entry requirements, however English and Maths Level 2 would be advantageous. A suitable work placement is required.

Assessments will be carried out using various evaluation mediums such as, observation of practice, witness statements, reflections, case studies, placement log and written questions.

Placement or Practical required

Learners will need to be working, or on a practical placement in a learning environment (school or college) for the duration of the course, and will need to display competence in both skills and knowledge. The school setting must be Key Stage One or higher - no School Nursery or Reception.

If placement or practical required, when?

Work placement is required throughout the qualification.

Certification Timeframe

You can expect to receive your certification within 12 weeks of successfully completing the qualification. Please note this can be longer if a EQA sample is required
