By providing oral health education you give individual dental patients information about oral health that is personally relevant to them. This information will be based on scientific principles and evidence and will be geared towards helping that individual make improvements to their oral health. This could be through improvements to their diet, dental related habits or oral hygiene routine. You may also provide this education to groups.
Oral Health Educators can deliver oral health advice in a number of ways. They often use props to help people visualise problem areas for cleaning and decay as well as how best to clean the teeth and surrounding areas in the mouth. Oral Health Educators can also use other visual aids in their lessons, such as videos and other presentation materials. In many instances an Oral Health Educator will work with patients in the dental practice but they could also go out into their local communities and take their oral health messages to members of the public. This could involve visiting local schools or various community and activity groups. Many Oral Health Educators are also involved with designing posters and leaflets that are distributed in public places and used within magazines or newspapers.
Oral Health Education is so important because oral health has such a huge impact on our general health and wellbeing. Many people take their oral health for granted but if they let it slip the effects of poor oral health can be drastic and painful. Not only can it impact a person’s ability to eat, it can also affect how they speak and socialise. Poor oral health can become so painful that people end up being absent from school and work. The knock-on effect is that it has a direct link to poor levels of education and can hinder people’s ability to learn, thrive and develop.
