Introduction to Payroll Systems

About the Introduction to Payroll Systems Certificate

Paying employees is not as simple as a straightforward bank transfer. Particularly in larger companies, there are a number of systems involved to ensure that every employee is paying the correct sum towards taxes, pensions and national insurance. New staff must be added, old staff taken away, and everyone must be paid on time. In some cases, this can be a large task and companies need skilled administrators to lead the process.

The Introduction to Payroll Systems Certificate qualification has been designed to educate individuals about the payroll processes. During your online studies you will cover modules in manual systems, gross and statutory pay, the PAYE regime and the NIC regime and statutory and voluntary deductions and net pay. You will also learn about payslips and computerised payroll systems. By the end of your distance learning course, you will be confident and competent when paying staff.

Who should study this course?

Courses like this are beneficial for those looking to find work as a payroll administrator or those already in the role who want to expand their knowledge. This home learning qualification is also useful for new or current business owners who need to set up their own payroll.

When you study at learndirect, we do not ask that you have any prior qualifications. If you are willing to engage in home study, and are motivated to learn about payroll systems, then this qualification will be perfect for you.

What happens after the course?

By the end of your studies, you will be able to work manual and computerised payroll systems. You will know how to handle sick pay, maternity pay and shift pay, as well as being fully versed in employment rights legislation.

If you desire, the qualification could lead to further study opportunities. Previously, people have gone on to study additional home study courses or foundation degrees in payroll management. Some students may even decide to take their studies to undergraduate level.

In many cases, students will choose to secure employment straight after graduating from this course. Individuals in possession of this certificate will be eligible to apply for work in many related roles. Some jobs people may choose include:

  • Payroll administrator
  • Payroll manager
  • Small business owner
