About the Course
ESOL – English for Speakers of Other Languages is designed for individuals aged over 16 and based in the UK whose native language is not English.
It’s intended for anyone who wishes to develop their English language skills for work, further learning or everyday life.
The course will help you develop strong reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. This will allow you to function more effectively in an English-speaking environment.
Upon completion of the course, you will find it easier to communicate which can make it easier to progress academically or professionally.
During your studies you will learn about sentences and word order, recognising verb instructions, finding information and reading in detail.
You will also be taught how to focus your writing, use correct spellings and punctuation and write paragraphs.
Commencing Studies
learndirect is a leading UK distance learning college, so you can develop your language skills from the environment that suits you. There are no classes to attend so you can complete your ESOL course when it suits you.
When you sign up to the course you will be provided with access to our online portal. When you log in you will find all the learning resources you need to complete your course.
Distance learning gives you choice of when to study. The only timetable you need to worry about is your own so you can work around other study or work commitments
Modules
All our learning is broadly categorised into the 3 main areas of the ESOL curriculum, these are:
- Reading
- Writing
- Speaking and listening
Within each area learners will find up to 15 tutorials on the main topics in that area. It may be you are only taking an exam in one component, no matter what you decide, our content and platform makes it easy to navigate to the areas you want to concentrate on. We also give you access to our free English diagnostics that will help identify your strengths and areas for improvement.

There is no experience or previous qualifications required for enrolment on this course. It is available to all students, of all academic backgrounds.
Our ESOL course is designed to build on your existing skills in order to bring your communication in English up to a high standard.
This will help you to further your studies or seek employment.
