About Your Course
The Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) (England) Regulations 2018 sets out the duties of local authorities in England to license activities involving animals and the relevant establishments relating to this.
This includes the selling of animals as pets, the provision of boarding for cats and dogs, and animal breeding. As a licensed inspector, your role will be to ensure that businesses and licensed individuals are adhering to the legislation and taking appropriate steps if not.
This Level 3 award will give you the knowledge you needed to carry out the role of an animal licensing inspector safely and within the legal requirements of the legislation.
The course will cover the legislation itself and the different roles and responsibilities the legislation makes provision for. You will also learn how to assess animal welfare and know what steps or remedial action should be taken to ensure the welfare of the animal or animals.

Upon completion of this unit you will:

- Understand the impact of legislation on animal welfare
- Know the requirements for companion animal accommodation
- Understand the responsibilities of an animal licensing inspector/animal welfare officer under legislation
Unit 2: Inspecting Animal Care Establishments
Upon completion of this unit you will:
- Be able to provide guidance on policies and procedures relating to animal care establishments
- Be able to understand requirements for staff training, knowledge, and onsite supervision
- Understand provision of information, advice, and guidance at animal care establishments
Unit 3: Skills in Practical Animal Care
Upon completion of this unit, you will:
- Know how to carry out a risk assessment in animal care establishments
- Be able to handle and restrain animals in animal care establishments
- Be able to carry out analysis of animal accommodation
- Be able to observe animal behaviour
- Be able to health check animals

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification but learners must be aged 16 or over.

Average Completion Timeframe
You have 24 months to complete your course.
Assessment Requirements
You will be assessed via a combination of video and photo submissions, your supervisor will also need to provide witness testimonies.
Evidence of Practical Competency Required
Learners need to gather their own evidence of practical tasks carried out.
Certification Timeframe
Learners can expect their certification within 6 months of completing the course, following the (EQA) External Quality Assurance of assessment.
Course Fees

You will be required to create a portfolio of evidence, that you will need to submit to gain your qualification.

This qualification has been developed to enable learners with experience in licensing premises under the Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) (England) Regulations 2018, to gain a formal qualification. Learners will have their knowledge and experience assessed across a broad range of areas from animal care to legislation and facility inspection. Learners may have the opportunity to work as an animal licencing inspector under the new legislation.
This qualification can be used by learners to gain employment in the sector with local councils or progression onto a Level 3 Diploma in a related subject.
