Studying your A Level

This course covers the requirements of both A Level and the international A Level in Biology. When you book your exam you can choose which one you would like to take.

A/iA Level is a chance to significantly extend your biological knowledge. You will take a deeper look at some of the core ideas covered at GCSE level while covering a range of new material.

During your studies, you will cover the basic components of living systems, biological molecules, biodiversity, homeostasis and much more.

You will study ecosystems and their inhabitants, the impact of human society and the changing world.

You will be encouraged to gain a superior understanding of biological principles, including genetics, patterns of inheritance, cloning and biological processes.

This course bundle includes all the course material you need as well as the exams that will get you your A /iA Level in Biology.

Across the exam papers, you will be quizzed across the breadth of the course material through a mix of short and long answer questions.

Upon completion of the course, you will be a capable and competent biologist, with a developed understanding of core principals. All of which will give you the level of competence required to progress to study at degree level.

Getting Started

learndirect is a leading UK distance learning institute, which means we take a person-centred approach to learning. We provide the tools to learn and you do the rest.

This means no physical classes or prohibitive timetables. You learn when you will be at your most effective, in an environment you will be most comfortable in.

You still get the academic support from your dedicated tutor. They will provide advice, guidance and feedback on your assignments. This allows you to progress in a structured, positive way.

Ultimately this allows you to study and complete your A Level or iA Level in Biology in a manner that reflects your lifestyle, commitments and your approach to learning.

You can start learning from the moment you have enrolled with us. We don’t have term times, just an online portal with all your course material ready and waiting. The only specific deadline to work towards is your exam – exam sittings are held once per year in May or June.

That means you can get your qualification in Biology as quickly as you choose.

Pursuing your career

Frequently Asked Questions

A-Level Biology covers a wide range of topics, from the basics of cells and molecules to the intricacies of genetics, evolution, and ecology. To do well in A-Level Biology, you will need to memorise a lot of scientific terms, facts, and processes, which can be challenging for some students. A good understanding of math and chemistry is also essential for success in A-Level Biology, as these subjects are used to underpin many of the concepts covered in the course. Despite the challenges, A-Level Biology can also be a very rewarding subject. It is a fascinating and ever-evolving field and studying it can give you a deep understanding of the living world. An A-Level in Biology opens doors to a wide range of exciting degrees and subsequent careers in the UK, both directly related to biology and in fields that benefit from a strong biological foundation. In terms of degrees, some popular options include biochemistry: focuses on the chemistry of living organisms and their processes, zoology: studies the animal kingdom, their behaviour, evolution, and conservation, botany: explores the plant kingdom, including their physiology, ecology, and diversity, microbiology: delves into the world of microorganisms, including bacteria, archaea, and fungi, genetics: examines genes, heredity, and their role in health and disease, marine biology: investigates the oceans and their ecosystems, focusing on marine organisms and their interactions. An A-Level in Biology also forms a strong foundation for various medical and healthcare professions, and your biology knowledge can also be valuable in other scientific fields, such as environmental science, food science, and forensic science.
Acing your A-Level Biology exams requires effective revision strategies. Some of our top tips include 1: writing down key terms, diagrams, and processes on flashcards and testing yourself regularly, 2: practising past papers and simulating exam conditions by timing yourself and thoroughly analysing your answers against the mark scheme, 3: creating mind maps to organise your understanding of different topics and visualise how they connect, 4: practice explaining complex biological concepts to someone with no prior knowledge.
A-Level Biology delves into the wonderful world of living things, diving deeper than your GCSE studies and equipping you with a comprehensive understanding of how life works. You can expect to cover topics like cell biology, biochemistry, genetics, ecology, organismal physiology, and evolution.
