How Long Does the Course Take to Complete?
The course can be studied over two years, though you can complete it sooner if you wish. Most of our students are ready to undertake their exams after 9 months. Meaning that if you want to power through and become qualified within a year, you can.
We appreciate that life isn’t always straightforward or consistent. That’s why our courses are flexible so you can focus on your studies when it suits you.
The subjects that are included in the online A-level Physics course are:
- Measurements and their errors – The use of SI units and their prefixes, the limitation of physical measurements and the estimation of physical quantities.
- Particles and radiation - The radiation of energy by means of fast-moving subatomic particles.
- Waves - The transport of energy without the transport of matter.
- Mechanics and energy - The energy amassed by an object due to its motion or position.
- Electricity – The energy that results from the flow of charged particles.
- Further mechanics and thermal physics – The study of circular and simple harmonic motion, plus the thermal properties of materials.
- Fields - The region in which points are affected by a force.
- Nuclear physics – Study of the structure of the atomic nucleus and the radiation from unstable nuclei.
There are also five optional topics, to allow you to focus on your area of interest. These are:
- Astrophysics – Applying the laws of physics to explain the birth, life and death of stars, planets, galaxies and nebulae among other objects in the universe.
- Medical physics – Studying the application of physics within healthcare, such as patient imaging, measurement and treatment.
- Turning points in physics – Understanding the relationship between assumptions, theories, and experimental discoveries in physics.
- Applied physics - The use of theoretical knowledge of the properties of physical bodies to problem solve.
- Electronics - The application of electromagnetic and quantum theory to build useful devices.
How Will I Be Assessed?
Following each unit, there will be a Tutor Marked Assignment (TMA). These will be completed online then submitted to your tutor. Once received, they will assess your assignment and return it to you with feedback. After you pass all your assignments, you can move onto the next stage and sit your exams. Exam sittings are held once per year in May or June.
