Primates are intelligent and highly social mammals. This Level 3 Award in Primate Studies (RQF) will give you a sound knowledge base in primate biology, ecology, and behaviour.
You will have the chance to explore the vital conservation work that is currently taking place to protect these amazing species. In addition, the qualification will help you to gain an understanding of how primates respond to captivity and how you can provide good care and promote the welfare of these complex mammals.

Placement
This qualification includes a one week placement at Wild Futures Monkey Sanctuary (WFMS) in Looe, Cornwall. WFMS is a permanent home for monkeys rescued from the UK pet trade and provides life-long care to monkeys, many of whom many have suffered from years of abuse and neglect. They have an expert team of carers who have the relevant skills to meet the complex physical, social and emotional needs of each individual, providing a high level of care.
Learners will have the opportunity to assist in all parts of the daily work including the cleaning of monkey enclosures, food preparation and creating enrichment items. Minimum age requirement of 18.
Modules
Unit 1: Primate Biology, Ecology and Behaviour
On completion of this unit you will:
- Understand the principles of primate biology
- Know the principles of primate ecology
- Understand key points in primate behaviour
- Understand the diversity of primate species
Unit 2: Primate Conservation and Management
On completion of this unit you will:
- Understand the principles of how to manage primates in the wild
- Understand the principles of how to manage primates in captivity
- Understand how to improve primate welfare in captivity
- Know the principles of primate conservation
Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification but learners must be aged 16 or over.

You have 24 months to complete your course.
Placement or Practical required
This course does not include a mandatory placement. However, learners have the opportunity to complete an optional placement that is offered at Wild Futures Monkey Sanctuary (WFMS) in Looe, Cornwall. WFMS is a permanent home for monkeys rescued from the UK pet trade and provides life-long care to monkeys, many of whom many have suffered from years of abuse and neglect. They have an expert team of carers who have the relevant skills to meet the complex physical, social and emotional needs of each individual, providing a high level of care. Certification Timeframe
Learners can expect their certification within 6 months of completing the course, following the (EQA) External Quality Assurance of assessment.
Course Fees
All course fees, inclusive of all payment plans including our Premium Credit Limited option, must be settled before certification can be ordered.
*You will have access to the course for 24 months.
To successfully gain the Level 3 Award in Primate Studies, students must achieve 10 credits.
You will be assessed through internal assessments conducted online at the end of each unit and assessed by one of our qualified animal tutors.
When are you assessed?
As you’re in control of how you learn, you’re also in charge of when you hand in your assignments.
This enables you to take as long as you need to thoroughly understand the unit before completing any assignments.

Through science, field conservation and the work of ZSL London and ZSL Whipsnade Zoos, habitats are getting the help they need, continuously tackling the challenges that come their way. By undertaking the Zookeeping Level 3 Diploma (RQF), you can apply for a Fellowship. If successful, you will get unlimited access to both zoos and borrowing rights to zoological texts.
Also, if you undergo your practical training at ZSL London, you may have an opportunity to apply for a job role at the zoo should you be successful. The career possibilities are far and wide.
