No experience? Here’s how to get a job you’ll love

So, you’ve decided it’s time to look for a brand-new job, but as you explore your options, you start to feel overwhelmed, realising you may not have the experience or skills required for many roles.

It’s time to stop panicking. The key thing to understand is that not every skill listed in a job description is essential. Many employers value personality, attitude, and transferable skills just as much as direct experience. Even if you lack certain technical skills, you might have the qualities that make you a perfect fit for the business.

If you’re struggling to land a job you’ll love, here are some practical steps to improve your chances and get your career on the right track.

Check your CV

Are you applying for jobs but not getting interviews? Are you receiving rejection emails shortly after submitting your application? The issue might be your CV.
A strong CV should be up-to-date, error-free, and tailored to each job you apply for. Make sure it highlights your strengths, transferable skills, and any relevant experience. You can find expert advice on how to create a winning CV here.

Are you applying for the right roles?

If you’ve been job-hunting for a while without success, consider whether you’re targeting the right positions. If a role requires years of experience and you don’t have it, it’s unlikely you’ll be shortlisted.

Instead, look for entry-level roles or positions that match your current skill set. Sometimes, you need to start in a stepping-stone role to gain experience before securing your dream job. It may not be your ideal salary or location to begin with, but building experience and learning new skills will open doors to better opportunities in the future.

Ask for feedback

If you’ve attended an interview but didn’t get the job, don’t be discouraged. Every rejection is an opportunity to grow.

Rather than feeling disheartened, ask the interviewer for feedback. Most employers are happy to provide insights into what you did well and what could be improved. This will help you refine your approach for future interviews. You can also check out our guide on how to ace online interviews here.

Work your way up

If you have a clear career goal but lack direct experience, consider working your way up from a related role.

For example, if you want to get into marketing but only have administrative experience, check whether your current company has a marketing team. Express your interest, offer to assist with tasks, and prove your value. Employers often prefer to promote from within, meaning you could transition into your dream job over time. Even if this isn’t possible, the experience will make you more competitive when applying elsewhere.

Gain work experience

If you have no experience at all, consider volunteering or taking on work experience placements.

This is a great way to build practical skills, understand the working environment, and show employers that you’re proactive. Many charities are always looking for volunteers, and this experience can significantly enhance your CV while giving back to the community.

Upskill with qualifications

While experience is valuable, gaining the right qualifications can be the fastest way to enter a job you’ll love. Many industries require specific training or certifications, and investing in your education can set you apart from other candidates.
